What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes cannot produce enough tears or when the tears they produce evaporate too quickly. Tears are essential for keeping the eyes lubricated and healthy, protecting them from dust and debris, and maintaining clear vision.

When your tear film is compromised, it can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, irritation, and permanent damage.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye can be an uncomfortable condition with multiple symptoms, including:

  • Stinging sensation
  • Gritty or scratchy feeling
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Excess tearing
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition that affects the oil glands in the eyelids. These tiny glands, called meibomian glands, produce an oil layer that sits on top of your tears and helps prevent them from evaporating too quickly.

If these glands become clogged or malfunction, they can’t produce oil, which disrupts the tear film’s composition and can lead to dry eye.

Dry Eye Screening & Treatments

At Langdon Vision, we include a dry eye screening as part of your comprehensive eye exam and provide more in-depth testing if needed. This painless process helps us uncover the root cause of your discomfort, whether it’s tear production issues, blocked glands, or something else.

Knowing the cause is key to finding relief. Once we understand your unique situation, we can create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

We’ve also invested in noninvasive treatment technologies, like InMode Lumecca IPL and Forma radiofrequency, along with exciting clinical products to help you discover longer-lasting relief.

Intense Pulsed Light

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is an in-office treatment that uses targeted light pulses to gently reduce inflammation and improve the function of the meibomian glands, increasing tear production. IPL can also reduce the signs of aging around the eyes by improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Radiofrequency (RF) uses gentle heat to target meibomian glands and improve their function. We use InMode Forma, a bipolar radiofrequency technology that is designed to treat delicate areas of the skin, including the upper and lower eyelids.

This treatment can also tighten the skin around the eyes for a more youthful appearance, making it a multi-functional option for those seeking both dry eye relief and aesthetic benefits.

Meibomian gland expression is used on the eyelid and the doctor gently applies pressure to express oil from the glands. A small instrument gently massages the eyelids and applies pressure to express the oils from the glands, providing quick relief for dry eye symptoms and helping restore proper tear production.

Sometimes, simply practicing good eyelid hygiene and using eye drops can greatly improve dry eye symptoms.

We offer several eyelid cleaning products and lubricating drops from iMed Pharma and Zocular. These products are designed to gently cleanse the eyelids, prevent infections, remove debris and crusts, and provide long-lasting moisture for dry eyes.

Omega-3 supplements, including fish oil are another commonly used treatment for dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve the quality of your tears and reduce inflammation.

Your eye nutrition is an important part of dry eye care, and our team considers all of your options.

I-MED Pharma is a Canadian company that provides a comprehensive range of products for ocular surface disorders, such as artificial tears, eye hygiene cleansers, dry eye ointments, punctal plugs, nutritional supplements, and therapeutic accessories.

We’re excited to offer these innovative, quality I-MED Pharma products that can help our patients experience significant relief.
